About me

Background and Education

I am Dr. Annkatrine Liegmann Gates, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I offer individual and couple therapy for adults. Born and raised in Northern Germany, I emigrated to the United States as a young adult, bringing an international perspective to my clinical work.

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology (A.L.B.) from Harvard University and my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from William James College in Newton, Massachusetts.

My focus areas include:

  • Self Exploration: Assisting clients in navigating family, relational, and deep inner struggles.
  • Trauma-Informed Therapy: Bringing grounded understanding and qualified support to those living with trauma.
  • Stepfamily Dynamics: Helping individuals and families make sense of the emotional and relational complexities that come with blending households.

Training

I completed my clinical training through internships and post-doctoral experiences at the following institutions:

  • Brandeis University (Waltham, MA): Completed a two-year internship and post-doctoral fellowship focused on treating Mood and Anxiety Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorders, OCD, PTSD), Autism Spectrum Disorder, Schizophrenia, and other Psychotic Disorders. I also received extensive training in Cultural and Racial Identity awareness and development.
  • Bournewood Hospital (Brookline, MA): Specialized in individual and group treatment for Substance Use Disorders (including alcohol and opioid dependence) and trauma-related issues (emotional, physical, and sexual abuse).
  • The Bromfield School (Harvard, MA): Provided psychotherapy and psychological assessments for children and adolescents.

Other

Additionally, I completed a post-graduate fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis and have pursued informal training across the United States and Europe. My ongoing professional development includes psychodynamic trauma treatment, multicultural and racial trauma and identity awareness and specialized skills training. I have also conducted extensive research specifically on stepfamilies, published writings on stepfamily dynamics, and am a certified Stepfamily Foundation Coach.
